What is the difference between DME and LME?

DME (Dry Malt Extract) is a powder with ~2% moisture, while LME (Liquid Malt Extract) is a syrup with ~20% water. DME has about 45 PPG potential, LME about 36 PPG. DME stores longer and is easier to measure precisely.

Can I mix DME and LME?

Yes. Calculate each separately and add their gravity contributions together. Many extract recipes use LME as the base and DME for fine-tuning gravity.

Do I need 100% efficiency with extract?

Extract dissolves completely, so you get nearly 100% of the potential extract. This is a key advantage of extract brewing — no efficiency guesswork. This calculator assumes 100% dissolution.

What is the difference between light, amber and dark extract?

Light extract is made from pale malt and has minimal colour. Amber uses some crystal malt for colour and a light caramel flavour. Dark extract includes roasted malts for deeper colour and richer flavour. For maximum recipe control, use light extract and steep specialty grains separately.

How much extract do I need for a standard batch?

A typical 23L batch at 1.050 OG needs roughly 3-3.5kg LME or 2.5-2.8kg DME. Stronger beers need more, lighter beers need less. This calculator gives you the precise amount for your target gravity and batch size.
