Grain Absorption Calculator
Estimate water lost to grain absorption during mashing.
Total weight of grain in your recipe
BIAB recovers water via bag squeezing; flaked grains absorb more
Total brew water to see how much remains after grain absorption
How We Calculate This
Absorption Calculation
Water Lost = Grain Weight (kg) x Effective Absorption Rate (L/kg)
The default rate of 1.04 L/kg is the most commonly used figure in homebrewing. BIAB brewers can subtract a squeeze recovery factor. Flaked-heavy grain bills use a higher rate of ~1.2 L/kg. Add this to your other losses (boil-off, dead space) to calculate total water needed.
