How is this different from the grain bill calculator?

This calculator lets you subtract the gravity contribution from known specialty malt additions, then calculates only the base malt needed to reach your target OG. It is useful when you know your specialty additions and need to find the base malt amount.

What PPG should I use for base malt?

Most base malts have 36-38 PPG. Pale Malt (Maris Otter): 37, Pilsner: 37, Munich: 34-35, Vienna: 35-36. This calculator defaults to 37 PPG for standard pale malt.

Can I use Munich or Vienna as a base malt?

Yes, Munich and Vienna malts have sufficient diastatic power to convert their own starches and can serve as 100% of the grist. They produce maltier, more flavourful beers. Munich gives deep malt character while Vienna gives a lighter toasty quality.

How much should I adjust for BIAB vs traditional mashing?

BIAB typically achieves 70-80% efficiency compared to 72-78% for three-vessel systems. If using BIAB, you may need 5-10% more base malt to hit the same OG. Track your own efficiency over several brews for the most accurate planning.
