Hop Utilisation Calculator — IBU & Bitterness Contribution
Calculate hop utilisation percentage, IBU contribution and bittering versus flavour ratio for any boil addition.
Alpha acid percentage from the hop packet — varies by variety and harvest year
Weight of this hop addition in grams
Volume of wort in the kettle at the point of addition — pre-boil volume for early additions
How many minutes these hops will be in the boil — longer boils extract more bitterness
Specific gravity of the wort during the boil — higher gravity reduces hop utilisation
Pellet hops have higher utilisation than whole or plug hops due to greater surface area
Choose the IBU calculation model — Tinseth is recommended for most homebrewers
How We Calculate This
This calculator estimates the bitterness contribution of a single hop addition based on alpha acid content, boil time, wort gravity, and batch volume.
Tinseth formula
Utilisation = Bigness Factor × Boil Time Factor
Bigness Factor = 1.65 × 0.000125^(gravity − 1)
Boil Time Factor = (1 − e^(−0.04 × time)) / 4.15
IBU calculation
IBU = (Hop weight (g) × AA% / 100 × Utilisation × 1000) / Volume (L)
A pellet hop bonus is applied multiplicatively to utilisation when pellets are selected. The bittering/flavour split is an approximation based on boil time relative to 20 minutes.
