How are beer calories calculated?

Beer calories come from two sources: alcohol and residual carbohydrates. Alcohol contributes about 7 kcal per gram, while carbohydrates contribute about 4 kcal per gram. The formula uses real extract (residual sugars) and alcohol by weight to estimate total calories.

How many calories in a typical pint?

A UK pint (568ml) of a standard 4-5% ABV bitter contains roughly 180-230 kcal. Stronger beers have more calories — an 8% DIPA might contain 350+ kcal per pint. Light session beers under 3.5% can be under 150 kcal.

Does higher ABV always mean more calories?

Generally yes, but not always. A dry, highly attenuated strong beer may have fewer calories than a sweet, full-bodied beer of the same ABV. Residual sugars (real extract) also contribute significantly to calorie content.

Is this the same as what is on a commercial label?

Commercial labels may use slightly different methods. This calculator uses the standard brewing industry formula and gives a good estimate. Actual calories can vary by about 5-10% depending on additional ingredients like fruit, lactose, or adjuncts.

How can I brew a lower-calorie beer?

Aim for higher attenuation (drier finish) and lower OG. Use simple sugars like dextrose to boost fermentability without adding body. Mash at a lower temperature (62-64°C) for a more fermentable wort. Session beers under 4% ABV are naturally lower in calories.

The Calorie Formula

Calories per 100ml are estimated using: cal/100ml = ((6.9 x ABW) + (4.0 x (RE - 0.1))) x FG, where ABW is alcohol by weight and RE is real extract in degrees Plato. This accounts for both alcohol and residual carbohydrate calories.

UK Pint Conversion

A UK pint is 568.26ml (not the US pint of 473ml). We multiply the per-100ml figure by 5.6826 to get the per-UK-pint value.
