Fermenter Size Calculator — Brewing Equipment
Calculate fermenter volume needed including headspace for krausen.
Volume of wort into fermenter
How We Calculate This
Fermenter Sizing
The minimum fermenter volume is: Fermenter Size = Batch Size x (1 + Headspace %). The headspace percentage includes room for krausen (the foam layer during active fermentation) which varies by yeast strain and beer style.
Krausen Considerations
Wheat beers and Belgian styles produce the most vigorous krausen, sometimes doubling the volume temporarily. Standard ales produce moderate krausen, while lagers are typically calmer. Always err on the side of more headspace.
