Why does line length matter?

The beer line creates resistance that slows the flow of beer from keg to tap. Too short = foamy pours. Too long = slow pours. The right length balances the CO2 pressure for a smooth pour.

What line diameter should I use?

3/16 inch (5mm ID) is standard for homebrewing. It provides good resistance in a short length. 1/4 inch (6mm) requires much longer lines to achieve the same resistance.

Can I coil excess line?

Yes. Coil extra line inside your kegerator. Coiling does not significantly affect resistance. Keep the line cold to prevent foaming.

Does line material affect resistance?

Yes, different materials have slightly different friction coefficients. Standard vinyl beer line and polyethylene tubing have similar resistance. Silicone tubing has slightly less resistance and may need to be slightly longer. Always use food-grade beer line rated for the pressure.

Should I insulate my beer lines?

If your lines pass through warm areas outside the kegerator, insulating them prevents warming that causes foaming. Inside a kegerator, insulation is not needed. For long jockey box or bar installations, insulated trunk lines or glycol-cooled systems maintain proper temperature.

Line Length = (Serving PSI - Height PSI - Faucet PSI) / Resistance per metre. Standard 5mm (3/16 in) line has ~6.56 PSI resistance per metre. 6mm (1/4 in) has ~2.3 PSI/m.
